One Sided Paper Project

Page history last edited by Gillian Roper 8 years, 11 months ago Saved with comment

The single most energy-conscious action anyone can take when using office equipment is to print or copy to both sides of the page.

So far this project has saved 56 % of a tree and reduced Greenhouse gas emissions by 154 kg.

What is the One Sided Paper Project?

This project is intended to encourage the use of both sides of every sheet of paper consumed in IITS. Doing so reduces paper and energy consumption. (See the Why Bother section below for more details)

How?

Paper that has been used on one side, e.g. one-sided paper, is collected in "1 sided paper depots" throughout the department and used in the following ways.

Scratch Pads

One sided paper is sorted and made into scrap paper pads by volunteers. These pads are available for use by all IITS employees.

Dedicated Printer

Unfortunately, the green printer disappeared sometime in 2012 and is no longer available.

On Friday, June 22, 2007, GreenIITS' proposal to dedicate a printer to be stocked solely with one sided paper was accepted by the department. On Wednesday, October 3, 2007 the new Green Printer went live. For instructions on how to connect to it visit Green Printing.

Formal documentation and duplex printing may continue to be produced on the "Xerox WorkCentre 24 PCL 6" printer in the photocopy room, again on LB 8. For documentation on setting up your desktop to use the "Xerox WorkCentre 24 PCL 6", see How to print on both sides of the paper

When did the One Sided Paper Project Start?

  • The first One Sided Paper Collection boxes were put out in November, 2006.
  • The first pads were made in December, 2006.
  • Trial period for first "1 sided printing" June 27 and June 28, 2007.

Where is the One Sided Paper collected?

LB-8

  1. photocopy room
  2. outside Tim Ni's office
  3. by the HP laser jet printer

Why bother?

Who is involved?

  • greeniits
  • IITS
  • Volunteers who set up boxes on their respective floors.
  • you when you pick up and use a one sided scratch pad.
  • you whenever you use a collection box and remind others to do so.
  • And, especially, when you add paper to the depots and remember to:
    • remove staples and paper clips
    • place the paper used face down
    • NEVER add paper containing confidential information.

Check the one sided paper project to do list for more ways that you can help.

Signs and Posters for collection boxes are available on the Files page (link is in header)

Footnotes

  1. A single tree can produce about 80,500 sheets of paper according to How Much Information? 2003 filed by University of California at Berkeley, http://www2.sims.berkeley.edu/research/projects/how-much-info-2003/print.htm.
  2. According to the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the U.S. Department of Energy, the manufacturing cost of virgin office paper is 17 Watt hours: http://eetd.lbl.gov/paper/ideas/html/issues.htm.
  3. According to the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the U.S. Department of Energy, the manufacturing cost of 100% recycled office paper is 12 Watt hours: http://eetd.lbl.gov/paper/ideas/html/issues.htm
  4. Office paper produces 0.27 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE) per ton of paper, according to the USA EPA report Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Management of Selected Materials in Municipal Solid Waste, 1998, p26, http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/wycd/waste/downloads/fullreport.pdf. This amount is equal to 1.0 metric tons of CO2 carbon equivalents per metric ton of paper. The Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the U.S. Department of Energy indicate that there are about 220,000 paper sheets in a ton: http://eetd.lbl.gov/paper/ideas/html/copyfactsM.htm.
